Nathan Bertling
Nathan was born in Spartanburg, S.C. in 1974. Educated at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., he graduated cum laude in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, a self-designed curriculum program that focused on studio art with minors in creative writing and speech communications. Undecided as to whether he would pursue his interest in the arts, Nathan entered graduate studies in philosophy and theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, FL. After considering careers in church ministry and academic theology, he decided to leave seminary and again devote himself to drawing and painting. From 2002 until now, he has studied with master artist Ben Long at the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas. As an apprentice at the League, he has taught portrait drawing classes and summer workshops. Currently, Nathan maintains a studio in the historic Montford district of Asheville where he continues to pursue his interest in figurative work, exploring both classical and contemporary approaches. With numerous pieces in private collections, he is available for work by commission.
